About Us
Established in 1999, the Indigenous Sports Circle Northwest Territories (ISCNWT), formerly known as the Aboriginal Sports Circle of the NWT, was created through a national consensus-building process to address the need for more accessible and equitable sports and recreation opportunities for Indigenous peoples across the Northwest Territories.
ISCNWT is governed by a Board of Directors comprising one representative from each of the five regions of the NWT, along with two Directors at Large and a Youth Director.
Our Story
In 1999, a pivotal moment for Indigenous sport and culture in the Northwest Territories began with the founding of The Aboriginal Sport Circle of the Western Arctic, which would later become the Indigenous Sport Circle NWT (ISCNWT).
Starting with just one dedicated staff member, the organization's mission was to break down barriers for Indigenous athletes across the Western Arctic. The early focus was on advocating for Team NT's participation in the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG), ensuring barrier-free opportunities for Indigenous athletes, and promoting the value of sport and recreation throughout the region.
A decade later, in 2009, the organization underwent a significant transformation, rebranding itself as The Aboriginal Sport Circle NWT. With a growing team of three, the organization continued its advocacy efforts while expanding its role. The organization began sending Team NT to the NAIG, helped develop Northern and Dene Games in the Territory, and played a key role in recognizing the achievements of Indigenous athletes. Hosting major events, ISCNWT celebrated traditional games and cultural heritage, further deepening its connection to the community and culture of the NWT.
April 1st, 2024, marked a significant milestone as ISCNWT celebrated its 25th Anniversary. Now a robust team of seven, the organization has significantly expanded its portfolio and impact. Its current mission focuses on fostering a future where Indigenous communities are healthy, active, and culturally connected. By emphasizing leadership development, supporting community initiatives through funding and partnerships, and hosting territorial sporting events, ISCNWT continues to honor its legacy while paving the way for a vibrant and inclusive future.
