April 1st, 2024 marked the 25th Anniversary of The Aboriginal Sport Circle NWT. As part of our journey in being a leader in promoting Indigenous sport and recreation in the Northwest Territories, we are excited to announces a significant milestone in this journey. Effective today, the organization will operate under the new name and visual identity: Indigenous Sport Circle NWT.
This decision marks a deliberate step towards inclusivity and reflects the organization's ongoing dedication to serving the diverse Indigenous communities across the Northwest Territories. The name change aligns with contemporary language, international standards and is the preferred term in global contexts. Further, the change follows consultations with community leaders, and stakeholders to ensure alignment with the values and aspirations of the Indigenous peoples it represents.
"We are excited to announce our new name, Indigenous Sport C
ircle NWT, which underscores our commitment to supporting Indigenous sport and fostering wellness throughout the NWT," said Angela Grandjambe, Chairperson. "This change represents our deep respect for the cultural identities and achievements of Indigenous athletes and communities in the Northwest Territories."
Indigenous Sport Circle NWT remains committed in its vision of healthy, active, culturally connected Indigenous Communities. We will continue to empower and build capacity within communities across the NWT, support culturally relevant programming and develop Indigenous athletes and coaches. The organization will continue to advocate for equitable access to sport, celebrate athletic achievements, and strengthen partnerships to enhance the quality of life for Indigenous peoples across the territory.
The new name and visual identity will be gradually implemented across all channels, including the organization's website, social media platforms, and official documents, in the coming months.
